If you’ve been hanging around looking for a quick and spooky-cute project, this little crochet bat might just flutter straight into your heart! Whether you’re decorating for Halloween, adding some gothic charm to your crochet projects, or simply love anything bat-themed, this appliqué is a tiny bundle of joy could make a nice hanging decoration for the holidays.
I designed this piece to be fast, beginner-friendly, and totally customisable. You can stitch up a handful in no time — perfect for decorating hats, tote bags, sweaters, or even turning into bunting. Bonus: no actual bats were disturbed in the making of this pattern! 🦇✨

🧶 What You’ll Need
Before we dive into the pattern, here’s a quick look at what you’ll need:
- Small amounts of yarn (I used DK weight in classic black (red for example), but purple or glittery yarn looks amazing too!)
- A suitable hook for your yarn. I used 2.5mm.
- Yarn needle for sewing in ends
- Scissors
🪡 The Bat Appliqué Crochet Pattern
R1. Slip knot, and make 20 chains.
R2. skip 2 chains, start in 3rd chain from hook. (dc, picot, ch, slst into original stitch) to make the end spike.
Sc3 into the next 3 chains, (ch, dc, picot, slst) into the next ch for the second spike curving inwards.
Sc3 into the next 3 chains, then (ch dc picot ch2 slst) into the next chain to create the middle spike.
Sc3 into the next 3 chains, then (dc picot ch2 slst) into the next chain for the fourth spike.
Sc3 into the next 3 chains, then (ch dc picot ch slst for end spike). CH and then add 2sc into that same stitch (end for the corner) rotating the work to continue the other end.
Dont turn over the work!

We now continue down the other side of the chain, no turning it over, just rotate the project.
3sc into the next 3 chains, 2tog, then 3sc into the next 3 chains. ch1 (dc picotx2, ch3, slst into next stitch). Then sc2 for the next 2 chains, 2tog, then 3sc. You will then slst end chain to finish.
You can then weave in your ends and even use a PVC water mix soak and dry to flatten and stiffen the project.

🖤 Finishing Touches & Ideas
Once your little bat is finished, you can:
- Sew it onto a beanie or bag for a subtle Halloween vibe.
- Make a few and string them together for spooky bunting.
- Use pvc glue water mix for strengthening it.
