The summer heat has well and truly settled in, and if you’re anything like me, your creative motivation might be melting faster than an ice lolly left in the sun. When it’s this warm, it’s easy to feel sluggish and unproductive — but that doesn’t mean creativity has to go completely on hold!
Whether you’re trying to keep cool, sneak in a few moments of creativity between fan breaks, or just want something relaxing and light to work on, here are five quick, low-effort crafts perfect for hot weather days. No stress, no heavy yarn blankets draped over your lap — just easy, satisfying makes to keep your hands (and imagination) moving.
1. 🧶 Crochet Coasters

I love a quick crochet win — and mini coasters are exactly that! They’re beginner-friendly, quick to complete, and you can use any cotton yarn scraps lying around.
They’re also useful (hello iced coffee rings on every surface) and make lovely little gifts. If you’re feeling adventurous, try fun shapes — hearts, hexagons, or even fruit slices.

2. 📚 Scrap Yarn Bookmarks

Hot weather means slower days, and what better time to get through that summer reading list? Pair your book with a handmade scrap yarn bookmark. You can keep them plain, add fringe, beads, or even tiny embroidery details if you’re feeling fancy.
They’re small, light, and incredibly satisfying to finish in a single sitting. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to use up leftover yarn from bigger projects.
3. ✍️ Sketch or Doodle Breaks

If you enjoy drawing or digital art, heatwaves are the perfect excuse to switch gears and embrace the quick doodle life. No pressure to finish a masterpiece — just grab your notebook, iPad, or tablet and sketch whatever comes to mind.
Doodle your pets (Loki and Bucky have been my muses lately!), your workspace, or random cute shapes and patterns. I often find these loose sketches lead to bigger project ideas later down the line.
4. 🧵 Decorative Button Crafts

I seem to be amassing buttons like a dragon hoards treasure — sound familiar? When it’s too hot to get stuck into a big project, try making small decorative crafts with buttons or small items in your stash.
Try gluing them to cards, stitching them onto little fabric patches, or even making a fun little wall piece or brooch. It’s mindless in the best way.
5. 🎀 Mini Embroidery Hoop Art

Tiny hoops are a dream during a heatwave. They’re small enough to work on without getting tangled in threads, and you can keep your designs light and fun — think flowers, fruit, initials, or celestial themes.
Plus, when you’re done, you’ve got a perfect little piece to hang on a wall, gift to a friend, or display in your workspace for some summer flair.
🌬️ Cool Crafting Tips for Hot Days
- Craft in short bursts: Set a 15-minute timer and rest between sessions.
- Keep water (and snacks) nearby: Hydration makes a huge difference.
- Use a lap tray or table: Keep your setup light and breezy.
- Choose cotton or bamboo yarn: Natural fibres are cooler to work with than acrylics or wool.
- Point a fan at your hands: It helps dry sweaty fingers and keeps you from sticking to your project!
💭 Final Thoughts
